How to Have a Productive Winter Break

Well were officially almost to winter break. I get done on the 6th this year and I don’t have to be back until January 11th. So i have over a month off from school. That’s still so crazy to me. With that though, it’s important to remember that while winter break should be a break and a chance to relax, it can still be very productive. Here’s my tips for keeping productive over winter break.

I know what you’re thinking. How does relaxing make you more productive. It seems silly but it is so hard to be productive when your are stressed out. Before you even think about getting things done, relax as much as possible.

I know this is another one that seems a little crazy. But when is the last time you got a few days in a row of at least 8 hours of sleep? Make that time winter break. When you get enough sleep, you wake recharged and ready to get things done.

Create a Schedule

This schedule doesn’t have to be super rigid by any means. Maybe its wake up around 9 am, eat breakfast, relax, do something productive, relax, eat lunch, relax, eat dinner, go to bed around midnight. This is a loose schedule but it helps so much to plan out your day.

Prioritize Family and Friends

This is especially important if you attend school far from home. Take advantage of the time you have at home and spend some time with the people you love. You will never regret spending time with your loved ones.

Make Some Money

This one is huge. I attribute part of my ability to be productive at college to the fact that I put aside money when I’m not in school so that I can work less. While most of the time the money I put aside comes from the summer, winter break is another great time to make some cash.

If you have a past job that you can go back to over break, call them up and see if you can get some hours. A lot of places higher holiday help, especially retailers, and this is a great way to make some money. Otherwise, see what short term gigs you can get. Personally, I am working on getting some pet sitting and babysitting gigs. Reach out to neighbors and let them know you’ll be home and available. If you don’t already have these contacts try, nextdoor, and facebook babysitting groups to advertise your services.

Work on Your Health

This one pairs well with the making sure you sleep and relax. It can be tempting to wait until New Years to kick off your healthy habits. DONT. If you can get something established and to become a routine at the start of break, when you go back to campus it will be much easier to keep these habits.

Personally, I plan to start attending orange theory over break. My mom has offered to come with until I get used to it. This not only forces me to go then, but makes me comfortable enough to go to the location close to campus when I get back.

Additionally, its a lot easier to get back to better eating habits when you’re away from campus.
